A build-up of ear-wax can be extremely irritating. Not only can it cause severe hearing problems, but it can be itchy and uncomfortable. In some cases, it can even cause water to become trapped in the ear, something that is extremely painful.
If you do not want to see a hearing specialist, there are ways you can get ear wax out naturally. However, if you have an extreme build-up of wax, it is recommended that you see an otolaryngologist or ear doctor as soon as possible.
With that said, here are some ways you can naturally remove your ear wax.
Ear-safe oils
Outside of seeing an earwax specialist, the first thing you should consider using are ear-safe oils. You need to soften the ear wax inside the canal in order to remove it.
Try to avoid using earbuds or your fingers to pick it out, because that could damage the canal or push the wax further inside your ear. Instead, try using one of the following oils before using a piece of tissue paper to dab it when it comes out of the canal. These oils include:
- Baby oil
- Mineral oil
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Glycerine
- Diluted hydrogen peroxide
These oils can ensure that wax is softened before you tip your head. You will then be able to tilt it and allow for the wax to come out. Try to avoid using ear drops unless they have been personally prescribed by your doctor.
Warm water
If you are suffering from a mild build-up of ear wax, you may want to consider using a few drops of warm water to try and soften it. This technique is not always successful, but if it works for you, you can expect the wax to soften to the point where it may even become similar to a liquid.
Baking soda
Another potential home remedy for removing ear wax is the use of baking soda. To use it, dissolve around ½ a teaspoon of the baking soda into two ounces of warm water. You should then use a dropper and bottle to suck up the liquid and place 5-10 drops into your ear. Keep your head tilted as you drip the solution into your ear.
You should then leave it in your ear for about an hour, before making sure to flush it out with water. You can use this solution every day until your ears are clean. Try to avoid using this solution for more than two weeks.
Irrigation techniques
You may be able to dislodge the ear wax in your ear canal through gentle water irrigation. Use a rubber bulb syringe to squirt the water into the ear canal. You should then tilt your head into a towel or bowl beneath to make sure you can have the water fully removed. If this is done correctly, you may be able to see larger pieces of wax fall into the bowl.
If you feel nervous about doing this on your own, a specialist can help you perform an irrigation of your ears to ensure you feel safe.
